Proper Fitting of MBTs

If you have never owned a pair of MBTs, Happy Feet Plus strongly recommends that you visit an MBT retailer for proper fitting and a 10-minute Test Walk.

For closed models: the MBT has to fit the foot perfectly. MBTs don’t let your foot slide forward with every step, like normal shoes do – they pull your heel back, instead. For this reason, MBTs should never be bought too large. It’s alright for the tips of your toes to be almost touching the edge of the shoe. Please make sure that the laces are tied tight enough that sliding forward is prevented, but not so tight that they impair circulation through the instep.

For sandals: Open the heel strap, and slide as far back as possible with your heel. Set the Velcro fastener in this position. Pull the arch strap snug so that forward slippage is impossible, but so that the MBT is still comfortable to wear. The toe strap prevents sideways slippage of the feet and should likewise sit snugly, but comfortably. Your toes should not touch the front edge when walking – this prevents chafing and blisters.

If the sandal model does not have adjustable heel straps, and if the form of your heel doesn’t allow a good heel position, you should decide in favor of the model with an adjustable heel strap.

The Beginning - History of MBT Shoes

In the late nineties MBT started a crusade.

They realized that the human body is simply not built to walk or stand on hard, flat surfaces. They also discovered that conventional shoes stabilize the body in such a way that the body’s supporting muscle system is neglected.

MBT wanted to make the world aware that our health is significantly influenced by the way we walk. They were determined to develop something that would continuously stimulate the postural and stabilizing muscles of the whole body. They knew they had to be radical to be successful.

Because MBT is totally different we refused to call it a shoe:

  • Its sole is curved, not flat.
  • It is unstable, not stable.
  • It activates your muscles instead of undermining them.
  • It has a positive effect on the entire body, not just the feet.

MBT considers it their mission to make people all over the world aware of the benefits of MBT and to help them live healthier and better lives.

MBT hopes you will join their crusade.

The Benefits of MBTs

Wearing MBTs provides many pro-body benefits, as supported by an increasing number of international studies. These studies support the numerous health benefits of the "anti-shoe". Step. Rolling action. Step. Rolling action. This simple movement creates tremendous benefit. It helps solve knee and back problems, relieves tension in the neck, eases joint pains, and helps to tone and shape the buttocks and thighs. The important thing is that every one of these claims stands up to scientific research - which is why the "anti-shoe" is now even prescribed by doctors and recommended by fitness experts.

The positive effect of the MBT is based on the principle of "natural instability". An effect which can, in fact, be achieved without the benefit of high-tech footwear: by simply walking barefoot on soft, uneven, natural ground such as sand or moss. However, in today's thoroughly modern world this is not always easy to do - but the health benefits are significant. While wearing MBTs the body is forced to maintain its natural balance, thereby stimulating and exercising the body's supporting muscle system which results in numerous pro-body benefits. MBTs activate and strengthen the small supporting muscles which are the body's "natural shock absorbers". The key to the MBT is the patented sole construction, at the heart of which is the soft Masai Sensor. It is located directly beneath the heel and simulates walking and standing on uneven ground. This creates a natural instability, to which the body responds with small, intuitive, compensatory movements. The midsole, with its integrated balancing area, requires an active and controlled rolling movement with every step.

In conjunction with the Masai Sensor, the body's entire musculoskeletal system is activated and exercised, the muscles in the buttocks, stomach and back are strengthened, posture and gait are kept relaxed and upright and stress on the joints and back is relieved. Not only does the anti-shoe increase the fitness levels of its wearer with every step, it also has sustainable health benefits.
